Overview of the Personal Bio-Data
From my experience, most personal bio-data documents, and many of the associated templates showing examples of how to construct one, seem to be from India-based web sites. This is, evidently, a major part of their culture.
It seems a bio-data document is used as a screening tool in marriage proposals. It allows the family considering the marriage proposal to research the background and family history of the proposing family, and weigh on whether the proposal is a sound one or not.
Among other things, it provides an educational background, a history of both the individual and a family lineage history, and a photograph.

Personal Bio-Data Content
The contents of a bio-data for personal use is, for the most part, historical data, either with or without a small photograph, and nothing further.
Evidently, it was important in India to know and know WELL the man who is interviewing for the position. The bio-data was generally a routine part of the interviewing process and helped the interviewer decide if the interviewee was from a good background, family, etc. However, this is NOT a requirement in the workforce now. (The most important aspect of interviewing for a position is the topic for another blogger, not me.)
However, competition and the infusion of western companies in India seems to have exerted pressure on companies and hiring managers to find the right people for the job, rather than the person with the best family background, etc.
